Red Rock Canyon open space is a 1470 acre public open space area located very close to Old Colorado City and Manitou on Highway 24. It is one of the most popular and easy to access hiking areas in the Colorado Springs area.
The canyon is characterized by a series of canyons and ridges that were created by millions of years of erosion. The views of the city skyline, mountains and dramatic red sandstone rock formations are stunning. The trails are ideal for hiking, running, biking and horse back riding. There is abundant wildlife and plant varieties in this heavily treed area. I saw an eagle about two weeks ago on the trail which is rare inside the city limits.
I hike in this area several times a month and even though it is a short ten minutes from my home it is a wonderful sanctuary. Any day of the week you will see multiple family and hiking groups exploring this public space.
